Honda & Yamaha Championship Years

Freddie Spencer (born December 20, 1961), known as Fast Freddie, is an American former world champion motorcycle racer. He was born in Shreveport, Louisiana. At the age of four, he began racing dirt track events near his hometown of Shreveport. After winning the 1978 250cc U.S. National Novice Class Road Racing Championship for first-year professionals, Spencer was contracted to ride for the American Honda racing team in the AMA Superbike Championship. He gave Honda their first-ever superbike victory when he won the Road America round of that years AMA Superbike Championship.

By 1982, Freddie Spencer had become a full-time rider for Hondas Grand Prix team and had competed in the 500cc class. In 1983, he won his first 500cc World Championship at the age of 21, becoming the youngest person ever to win the title. His record has since been surpassed by Marc Marquez in 2013.

Freddie Spencer now lives in London and commentates on television for various racing series. For 2019 he was appointed chairman of the FIM MotoGP™ Stewards Panel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Freddie Spencer 19 season suit should I order?

Pick your era: 1980–1982 Spencer rode Yamaha and Honda-HRC machinery in silver and red liveries; 1983–1984 marked his championship years in factory Honda blue and gold; 1985–1986 Rothmans Honda featured a white-and-gold scheme; 1987 and 1989 Yamaha campaigns used burgundy and white panels. Each suit replicates the authentic team colors and panel layout from that specific season. Standard sizes ship in 10 to 15 working days; made-to-measure orders ship in 4 to 6 weeks from spec confirmation. Check the Size Guide before ordering to match your measurements.

Why is kangaroo leather used in race-replica suits?

Kangaroo leather is valued in professional racing for tear strength and lighter weight compared to thicker hides. It remains supple when hand-stitched at stress points—collar, cuffs, waist, and underarm seams—supporting repeated movement during high-speed cornering and sliding. Each Freddie Spencer 19 suit uses 1.2mm grain-side kangaroo with double-stitched reinforcement at stress zones. This construction allows riders to move freely through tucked racing posture without fraying or separation over time. The leather develops a natural patina with regular conditioning every 6 to 12 months.

How does a custom-made race suit compare to standard sizing?

Standard sizes fit most riders across common torso lengths and arm reaches. Made-to-measure suits adjust sleeve length, torso height, waist, and inseam to your body for a tucked track position without excess bulk or gaps at the collar and cuffs. Our made-to-measure process ships in 4 to 6 weeks from spec confirmation once you confirm sleeve length, chest width, waist circumference, and shoulder breadth. Standard suits arrive in 10 to 15 working days. Both options use hand-stitched kangaroo leather with season-accurate Freddie Spencer 19 panels and pre-curved sleeves. Review the Size Guide to confirm which option matches your frame.

What makes Freddie Spencer 19 replica suits race-authentic?

Each suit replicates the documented team livery, panel seams, and colorway from Spencer's actual race seasons—1980 Yamaha TZ500 silver, 1983 Honda championship red, 1985 Rothmans gold-and-white, and 1989 Marlboro Yamaha burgundy. The suits use pre-curved sleeves and anatomic panels matching the race fit of that era. Hand-stitched kangaroo leather and double-stitched seams at collar, elbow, back, and waist reinforce durability during track use. Whether you order a standard size (ships 10 to 15 working days) or made-to-measure (ships 4 to 6 weeks from spec confirmation), you receive season-accurate construction. Contact the Help Center if you need clarification on a specific season's design details.

How should I care for a kangaroo leather race suit?

Condition your suit every 6 to 12 months with a leather oil applied to the grain side to keep it supple and restore natural sheen. Wipe away dust and dirt with a soft damp cloth immediately after rides, then air-dry flat away from direct heat or sunlight. Store the suit on a padded hanger in a cool, dry space to maintain shape. Avoid folding the sleeves or torso when not in use, as creasing weakens grain-side fibers. Hand-stitched seams at stress points require no special maintenance beyond conditioning—the double stitching supports normal wear during repeated track sessions.
